What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that often appear blue or purple and are most commonly found in the legs. They may be raised above the surface of the skin and can cause aching, heaviness, or swelling. Diagnosis starts at a varicose vein clinic with a thorough consultation and a detailed evaluation using state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging.

While not considered a life-threatening medical condition, varicose veins can cause discomfort and lead to more severe issues, such as blood clotting, if not treated. Beyond the swelling or pain caused by varicose veins, they are often a source of embarrassment due to their unsightly appearance.

How Are Varicose Veins Diagnosed?

Whether you’re concerned about appearance, pain, or potential health complications, our board-certified vein specialists are here to guide you through your varicose vein diagnostic and treatment options.

Ultrasound Vein Mapping

Ultrasound vein mapping is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that allows our specialists to see beneath the surface of your skin and assess vein function. This imaging technique is key to identifying the root cause of your symptoms and developing a personalized treatment plan.

  • What to Expect:
    • Takes about 30-90 minutes
    • Performed in-office by skilled vascular technicians
    • No downtime or prep required
  • What It Does:
    • Visualizes blood flow and vein structure
    • Identifies faulty valves or areas of reflux
    • Helps plan targeted treatment for optimal results

Varicose Vein Treatment

At Gilvydis Vein Clinic, our varicose vein treatments are designed with your comfort, safety, and lifestyle in mind. We offer minimally invasive procedures that are typically completed in under an hour and require little to no downtime.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a proven treatment for small to medium-sized varicose veins. It involves injecting a safe solution directly into the affected vein, causing it to collapse and eventually be absorbed by the body.

  • What to Expect:

    • Completed in 15–30 minutes
    • Little to no discomfort
    • No anesthesia required
    • Resume daily activities immediately

  • Ideal For: Spider veins and small varicose veins in legs or ankles

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

Endovenous Laser Ablation is a popular outpatient varicose vein surgery used to treat larger varicose veins. It delivers laser energy through a small catheter to seal the damaged vein shut.

  • What to Expect:

    • Local anesthesia is used
    • Completed in less than an hour
    • Mild soreness or tightness may occur for 1–2 days
    • High success rate with minimal scarring

  • Ideal For: Larger varicose veins with deeper or more complex vein issues

Treatment Aftercare

After your procedure, proper aftercare is essential to ensure a smooth recovery and long-lasting results. Most patients can return to normal activities the same day, but there are a few best practices to keep in mind:

  • Wear compression stockings as recommended
  • Avoid prolonged standing or sitting for the first few days
  • Take short walks regularly to promote circulation
  • Keep treated areas clean and dry
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 7–10 days

While complications are rare, it’s important to follow your provider’s instructions closely. If you notice unusual pain, swelling, or redness, contact our office right away.

  • Mild bruising or tenderness around the treatment area
  • Temporary skin discoloration or redness
  • In rare cases: blood clots (superficial thrombophlebitis), infection, or nerve irritation

Our team at Gilvydis Vein Clinic takes every precaution to minimize these risks and provide expert post-treatment care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that often appear blue or purple and are most commonly found in the legs. They can cause discomfort or pain.

Many treatments take less than 45 minutes and are performed in-office. Most patients resume their regular activities on the same day. Some individuals may require multiple sessions, depending on the severity of their condition.

While not life-threatening, varicose veins can cause discomfort and may lead to complications such as blood clots or skin ulcers if left untreated. They also often lead to cosmetic concerns and embarrassment due to swelling and discoloration.

In some cases, new varicose veins may form over time, especially if the underlying causes (like poor circulation or prolonged standing) persist. Regular monitoring and lifestyle changes can help reduce the recurrence of symptoms.

You should consult a vein specialist if you experience pain or swelling in your legs, skin changes or ulcers around the veins, bleeding from the veins, increasing discomfort or visible worsening.
