Varicose Vein FAQ

Get answers to the most frequently asked questions.

What are varicose veins? What is venous disease?

Varicose veins are veins that are swollen, unattractive and often uncomfortable, usually occurring in the legs. Varicose veins, and often the smaller spider veins, are related to venous disease, the failure or insufficiency of valves inside veins. We explain these in greater detail on our venous disease pages.

Do I need a referral from my primary doctor?

Depending on your insurance, a referral from your physician may be needed, but it isn’t generally required of people with PPO insurance. Also, no physician referral is required to be screened at one of our free screening events. Because spider veins are considered an aesthetic, non-medical concern, treatment is entirely elective and also requires no physician referral. If you have specific questions, give us a call at 815-681-7563 or contact us online.

What happens during my first visit?

Plan to arrive early to complete paperwork. You can save time by downloading and completing your paperwork prior to your appointment. Also, read our page dedicated to what you should bring and what you can expect during your first visit.

How long will it take to recover from my treatment?

There is no way to predict the length of time it will take for you to recover. That’s because you are a unique person. But the general answer is that it won’t take very long at all. Because Dr. Gilvydis uses the most advanced minimally invasive methods to treat vein disease, his care is designed to provide great results with the least possible amount of disturbance of normal tissue. Why? So that you can have the barest minimum of scarring, discomfort and downtime. Most patients experience an immediate return to normal activity after getting up and going home. But each person is different.

How can I schedule an appointment?

All you need to do is call 815-681-7563 to schedule an appointment that suits your schedule. Or you can request an appointment online. Our staff will be happy to assist you!

What are my payment options?

Medically significant venous insufficiency is covered by most insurance plans. There are requirements that must be met, including recommended time wearing compression hose, to be eligible for insurance coverage. For cosmetic treatments, we accept Visa, MasterCard and debit cards, and we do offer third-party financing options.

How many visits does it take to resolve my varicose veins?

Again, there is no way to confidently predict how many visits you will need until you’ve been evaluated and diagnosed. Dr. Gilvydis has no way of knowing the nature and extent of your problem until he meets you. The extent of your venous insufficiency and vein disease has a direct relationship with how many and what kind of treatments you need. But all of Dr. Gilvydis’ treatments are minimally invasive, and few vein specialists in Illinois are more credentialed or experienced at resolving varicose veins with excellent results.
