Everything You Need To Know About Varicose Veins

What They Are

While not considered a life-threatening medical condition, varicose veins can cause discomfort and lead to more severe issues, such as blood clots, if not treated. Beyond the swelling or pain caused by varicose veins, they are often a source of embarrassment due to their unsightly appearance.

What Causes Them

Valve Dysfunction

Your veins contain one-way valves that keep blood flowing toward your heart. When these valves weaken or fail, blood can flow backward and pool in the veins, causing them to enlarge and become varicose.

Genetics

Family history plays a significant role. You’re more likely to develop varicose veins if your parents had varicose veins.

Increased Pressure

Prolonged standing or sitting, especially common in certain occupations, can increase pressure in your leg veins. This added pressure can stretch vein walls and compromise valve function.

Age

As we age, our vein walls naturally lose elasticity, making them more susceptible to becoming varicose.

Pregnancy

The increased blood volume during pregnancy and hormonal changes can lead to varicose veins.

Obesity

Extra weight puts additional pressure on your veins, increasing the risk of valve dysfunction.

Treatment Options

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

Our minimally invasive EVLA treatment is a 45-minute outpatient procedure that closes off unhealthy veins using a laser catheter. We then redirect your blood to healthy veins. Most patients can resume normal activities on the same day.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure that’s quick, painless, and typically takes 15-45 minutes. We inject a foam or liquid agent under light or ultrasound guidance to close off bad veins, which include varicose veins. The collapsed vein shrinks and reabsorbs into your body.
